Duke and The Maintenance Mindset
Posted February 27, 2018 12:36 PM
Did you know that dogs have a "maintenance mindset?" Hi Duke here, and you probably want to know what that means. Dogs often exhibit a "maintenance mindset" in that they thrive on routine, predictability, and consistent care, which support their physical and mental well-being. People, on the other hand, do not always have a "maintenance mindset" when it comes to their vehicles. So today, I will bark about having a mindset for maintenance... let's get focused and barkin'!!!
When it comes to their vehicles, some Los Altos residents don't have a maintenance mindset. They know they need to take care of their cars, but it's really hard to get them to remember to do it. Los Altos drivers generally accept that many things in life require regular maintenance, but just may not have applied it to their vehicles.
Here's something that will help: The key to good vehicle maintenance starts with the oil change. Think about it – when you go in for a full-service oil change, your friendly and knowledgeable Allied Auto Works service advisor will check all your fluids. If one of them is low, he can look for the reason. If your serpentine belt is cracked, he'll see it and let you know. Corroded battery cable – they've got you covered. And at Allied Auto Works, we check whether your vehicle manufacturer has recommended any services at your current mileage.
The oil change becomes kind of a focal point, a way to check in to see what needs to be done. The fact is that vehicle inspection surveys consistently reveal that over 80% of vehicles have one or more unperformed repair or maintenance services. Vehicles are generally very reliable and can take a lot of abuse and neglect. But you have to remember that vehicles are complicated machines. There are parts and fluids that are critical to their operation. Without them, the vehicle won't run at all.
So when you come into Allied Auto Works for an oil change, you get advice from your friendly, knowledgeable service advisor and reminders about recommended services so you can avoid a total failure. And remember that your friendly and knowledgeable Allied Auto Works service advisor can help you work out a maintenance and repair plan, prioritizing and scheduling the work to make sure you and your family are safe and to help you avoid expensive breakdowns.
I leave you with this thought,
A mind is like a parachute. It doesn't work if it is not open.
Duke

Tracking True in IA: Wheel Alignment in CLIVE
Posted February 21, 2018 3:35 PM
The biggest issue for CLIVE area drivers is always safety. When your vehicle wheels are out of alignment, the vehicle will pull to one side, which could lead to an accident. When you're vehicle is out of alignment, you should have it taken care of right away at Acheson Auto Works in CLIVE.
When undergoing an alignment service at Acheson Auto Works, your vehicle is put on an alignment rack where the tires, steering and suspension parts are checked for damage. Then the alignment is charted and checked against the factory settings.
Precision adjustments are made to bring the wheels back into alignment. This gets all four wheels going in exactly the same direction.
CLIVE drivers should be aware of the signs of alignment problems. These include the car pulling to one side. Also, the steering wheel may not be centered when you're going straight. If you see the edges of one or more tires rapidly wearing down, you should have your CLIVE service center look it over. If you've been in an auto accident in IA, you should get your alignment checked.
Obviously, a big jolt can seriously knock things out of alignment, but CLIVE area drivers also need to understand that a series of smaller ones can add up.
That's why we recommend periodic alignment checks. If your vehicle owner's manual doesn't specify the interval, once a year might be appropriate. Or check with a service advisor at Acheson Auto Works in CLIVE.
One thing's for sure: the cost of the alignment at Acheson Auto Works is cheaper for CLIVE drivers than having to buy a couple of new tires because of neglect.

Keeping Your CLIVE Air Fresh When Driving With a Clean Cabin Air Filter
Posted February 12, 2018 8:13 PM
Pop quiz: What is a cabin air filter?
A. A filter for your CLIVE house?
B. A fresh, piney scent?
C. A filter for the passenger compartment of your car?
Clever you, it's C.
A cabin air filter cleans the outside air before it comes into the passenger compartment of your vehicle. It filters out common IA air particles like dust, pollen, spores, bacteria, pollutants, exhaust gas, odors and even sparrows.
These high tech filters can block particles larger than 3 microns. By contrast, a grain of sand is about 200 microns.
Not all CLIVE vehicles have cabin air filters. They are fairly new on the scene in IA. Last check, about 40 percent of new vehicles sold in CLIVE come with cabin air filters, but the number is growing every year.
Cabin air filters make driving a lot more pleasant for people in CLIVE. Your vehicle can be a haven during our IA allergy season with very little dust and pollen getting into the cabin. Of course, like all filters, the cabin air filter eventually gets clogged. When this happens, your heating and air conditioning flow can become restricted. The filter can even get kind of smelly.
Check your owner's manual for replacement guidelines. If your vehicle owner's manual doesn't mention your cabin air filter, ask your friendly and knowledgeable service advisor at Acheson Auto Works for a recommendation. It's usually every year or 12,000 miles /19,000 kilometers. Change it sooner if you drive in dusty conditions around the CLIVE area, or if you start to notice a funky smell coming from your vents.
The team at Acheson Auto Works urges CLIVE drivers to keep their cabin air filter cleans. It may not help with your brother-in-law in the backseat, but it will make your driving experience around CLIVE more enjoyable.
Come by and we'll take a look at your cabin air filter for you.

Nighttime Visibility in CLIVE
Posted February 4, 2018 8:31 PM
There are a number of factors that contribute to the high nighttime accident rate in the CLIVE area, things like drowsy driving and a higher rate of impaired driving. Without a doubt, visibility is a major contributor. Let's focus on visibility…
It's said that 90 percent of our driving decisions are based on what we see. Nighttime driving has the effect of reducing 20/20 vision to the equivalent of 20/50 vision. What you could clearly see at 50 feet in daylight can't be seen until you are just 20 feet away at night.
Too make sure your headlights are giving you the greatest visibility, visit us at Acheson Auto Works, located at 8000 UNIVERSITY BLVD, CLIVE, IA 50325. Please give us a call to make an appointment: 515-223-4300.
Accident avoidance is dependent on reaction time. Reaction time deteriorates measurably in low light conditions. One thing we can do to improve visibility is to make sure our headlights are as bright as they can possibly be.
Headlamps dim over time. They dim so gradually that you may not notice it. Many experts suggest replacing your standard or halogen headlamps once a year.
If your vehicle has standard headlamps, consider upgrading to halogen lamps. They make a big difference. And there are upgrades available within the halogen category as well. This once-a-year expense is very modest compared to the safety benefits.
Some vehicles come with high intensity discharge – or HID – headlamps. These lamps should last for the life of your vehicle. They are very bright and are clearly the best option for nighttime driving. Depending on your vehicle, you may be able to upgrade to HID headlamps. Talk with your CLIVE area service advisor at Acheson Auto Works about options for your car.
Another startling fact is that 90 percent of vehicles on the road have dirty or yellowed headlight covers. Dirty is easy to fix. Just run the window washer over the headlight cover when you stop for gas. Get those bugs and dirt off the cover.
Now plastic headlight covers can yellow or become hazy over time. They can be restored to clarity with a special polishing process. Our pros at Acheson Auto Works can help you with this service.
It's also vital to keep your windshield clean and streak free when driving at night. Make sure you have plenty of washer fluid and that your windshield wipers are in good working order.
We recommend replacing wiper blades twice a year – in the spring and fall. Fall is also a good time to replace headlamps so you'll be ready for those long winter nights.
